Mariana Alves, owner & baker

Mariana grew up in Belo Horizonte, learning to fold guava paste into dough long before she could reach the stove. She moved to the United States in 2014 with two suitcases — one of them packed almost entirely with baking pans — and spent years cooking in other people's kitchens while selling brigadeiros to neighbors on the weekends.

Doce Alegria was born from those weekends. Everything is still made by her hands, with Brazilian ingredients whenever it matters: guava and coconut from the Northeast, Minas cheese for the pão de queijo, doce de leite cooked the slow way. Nothing is adapted to taste “American” — the point is that it tastes like home.
